Check Out Real Gear.

Cameras, lights, sound and grip, free for enrolled Cinema and TV students. Here’s how to get set up, request gear, and bring it back on time.

How Checkout Works

  1. Sign the Agreement

Do this once every semester, before your first checkout. You’ll sign in with your LACCD student email and need a photo ID. It confirms you’re responsible for gear while it’s in your care.

    Open the agreement form

    Which IDs count?
    • Driver’s license (any U.S. state or foreign)
    • State-issued ID card
    • Military ID
    • Passport (U.S. or foreign)
    • Permanent Resident Card
    • Tribal residence card
  2. Accept Your Shelf Invite

Staff add you to Shelf, our checkout system, by hand, so it isn’t instant. Watch your inbox and spam folder, then click “Accept the invite” and finish setup.

  3. Find Gear for Your Class

What you can borrow depends on the class you’re in. Open the catalog, choose Filter, then Class Access, and pick your class (for example CINE 002). Add a Department filter to narrow it to sound, lighting and so on.

    Browse the gear catalog

  4. Email Your Request

Gear is first come, first served, so ask early. Pick-up and drop-off must fall within Equipment Room hours. The button opens an email with everything we need already laid out.

    Start an Equipment Request

We’ll reply to confirm your list or suggest alternatives if something’s already out.

  5. Pick It Up

Come to the cage with your student ID. Check every item against the printed list before you sign. Tell us right away if anything is missing.

  6. Bring It Back on Time

Tell us up front about any damage or problems. We’ll inspect everything and check it back in. Tip: set phone reminders for the day before and the day of your return.

Checkout Rules

Checkouts last one week at most. We can’t extend them for any reason.

Late returns earn strikes
StrikeWhat happens
1stNo checkouts for one week
2ndNo checkouts for two weeks
3rdNo checkouts for the rest of the semester

Running late? Email us. Each day a return is late without a heads-up counts as another strike. Strikes are given at staff discretion and sent by email.

Big Pickups: Driving on Campus

If you’ve reserved more than you can carry, you can schedule a drive-on. Requests must be approved in advance. There are no same-day drive-ons.

How to schedule a drive-on

Email the equipment room manager with your project, the date and time, and your vehicle’s year, make, model, color and plate.

Start a drive-on request

On the day
  • Enter from Vermont Ave, near the Child Development Center.
  • At the gate, call ext. 2626. Staff will meet you, let you in and walk you to the pickup area. Evenings (12:30–11 pm), call ext. 2625.
  • Drive under 5 mph the whole time and watch for people walking, biking and scootering.
  • Park near the building’s front doors. Leave campus the same way.
